Recycled Water
Recycled water is sewage that has undergone extensive treatment to make it usable again. This treatment improves the water quality through physical, chemical and biological treatment processes to make the water suitable again for landscape irrigation and other applications. The use of recycled water is highly regulated to ensure its safety. In some cases, recycled water is used to supplement local groundwater supplies. Such applications must be approved and permitted by regulatory agencies and must comply with very stringent conditions before it is allowed.
More water is needed as our population continues to grow. It is essential that more recycled water be used where appropriate to conserve our water resources. Using recycled water helps offset demands for imported water and also preserve local groundwater sources of supply. In addition, by using recycled water, it uses less energy than importing water.
