Not necessarily. Various studies have been conducted and it is a myth that bottled water is safer than tap water. Tap water is more rigorously monitored than bottled water, both in the number of constituents that are tested and the frequency of testing. In 1999, the National Resources Defense Council published a report, "Bottled Water ? Pure Drink or Pure Hype". Over 1,000 bottled water samples were tested and compared to bottled water standards established by the Food and Drug Administration.
About one third exceeded acceptable concentrations of bacteria or chemicals. In addition, there are no requirements for disinfection of bottled water, and therefore, harmful microbes may grow over time. The use of plastic bottles requires energy to manufacture, thereby contributing to the emissions of greenhouse gases, and must also be disposed of properly or recycled to minimize environmental impacts.
