The 420 square mile service area uses about 250,000
acre-feet of groundwater per year taken from the
aquifers of the Central Coast and West Coast Basins.
This equates to nearly 40% of the total demand for water.
WRD is involved in groundwater monitoring, safe drinking
water programs, combating seawater intrusion and
groundwater replenishment operations throughout
Southern Los Angeles County.

The Water Independence Now (WIN) program is a series of projects that will fully utilize stormwater and recycled water sources to restore and protect the groundwater resources of the Central and West Coast Basins. In the past, a large percentage of replenishment water came from sources in Northern California and the Colorado River.
WIN seeks to completely eliminate this dependence on imported water to ensure the future security of our region by developing local resources to create a locally sustainable groundwater supply.. >>
The Water Replenishment District has been awarded the prestigious Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for outstanding budget presentation and process for six years in a row.
If you have household hazardous waste please dispose of it properly. Click here to learn more.
GRIP is a component of the WIN program that will replenish the groundwater of the Central and San Gabriel Basins. GRIP is a partnership between WRD and the Sanitation District of Los Angeles County.
Standard and Poor's and Fitch Rating: AA+
"Along with WRD's longstanding mission of preserving and protecting the local Basins with high quality groundwater, the District strives to maintain high financial standards which have resulted in achieving AA+ ratings from both Standards & Poor' s and Fitch."
- Albert Robles
WRD Board Treasurer
"This AA+ rating recognizes the outstanding efforts that the District undertakes in the management of public resources. This rating is a testament to the District's continuing efforts to fiscal responsibility and public transparency."
- Sergio Calderon
WRD Board President
WRD's Safe Drinking water Program offers assistance to pumpers for treating contaminated groundwater. This allows affected wells to meet public drinking water standards and lessens the probability of contaminated water affecting other wells.

ACWA Members Participate in Congressional Briefing
A congressional briefing held last week on “The Future of Alternative Water Supplies” received a boost from two ACWA members.
Richard Nagel, general manager for West Basin Municipal Water District, and Robb Whitaker, general manager for the Water Replenishment District, provided a packed room with their perspectives. Nagel spoke on “The Importance of Desalination to California’s Water Future” and Whitaker on “Water Recycling in Southern California- A Local Case Study.” The briefing was hosted by Rep. Grace Napolitano (D-38) and sponsored by the WateReuse Association.
In discussing the use of desalination, Nagel noted desalinated water used to cost 20 times as much as imported water from the Colorado River but he expects costs to equalize by 2015. During his presentation, Whitaker highlighted how his district’s growing reuse strategies are reducing their need for imported water from California’s fragile Bay-Delta.
WRD General Manager Robb Whitaker Tapped as 2011 WateReuse 'Recycled Water Advocate of the Year
Robb Whitaker, General Manager for the Water Replenishment District (WRD), has been tapped as this year's recipient of the "Recycled Water Advocate of the Year' award from the California Section of the WateReuse Association. The award recognizes an individual who has made "significant contributions to the advancement of water reuse through active support and promotion of recycled water
"I am honored to be receiving this award on behalf of the Water Replenishment District team," said Whitaker. "I am privileged to work with an incredible group of professionals on a daily basis and a Board of Directors committed to securing the future reliability of our groundwater through the development of local sources such as recycled water."
Robb Whitaker was selected by WaterReuse for his success in spearheading several of WRD's innovative water reuse and replenishment projects in the state.
Whitaker conceived the District's signature Water Independence Now (WIN) program. The WIN program is a nationally recognized model of local water supply development that includes the Leo J. Vander Lans Advanced Water Treatment Plant in Long Beach, California and the Groundwater Reliability Improvement Program (GRIP) in conjunction with the County Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County. These efforts replace imported water with highly purified wastewater for the protection and replenishment of the groundwater basins.
